Description
This course applies to educators and support staff working in education or children’s services who are required to
respond in the event of a first aid emergency. It incorporates the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid
response to infants, children and adults.

 

Duration

  • 6 hours face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment
    with online/workbook pre-work, OR
  • Full face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment is available

 

Course Content
This course provides the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, management of
casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

 

Topics include:

  • Differences between adults and children for provision of first aid
  • Normal clinical values for children
  • Airway management, including infant airway
  • CPR for adults, children and infants
  • Automated External Defibrillation
  • Medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy and convulsions
  • Infection control and First Aid for minor wounds
  • Risk management for asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Anaphylaxis emergency response
  • Asthma emergency response
  • Control of major external bleeding and shock
  • Management of near drowning
  • Hyperthermia and hypothermia
  • Burns and electric shock
  • Eye and soft tissue injuries
  • Venomous bites and stings
  • Fractures and spinal injuries
  • Head, chest and abdominal injuries
  • Communicating details of an incident
  • Reporting requirements in education and children’s services
  • Debriefing and evaluation of response to critical incidents
