Advanced First Aid


This course applies to a wide range of settings where emergencies involving cardiac arrest may occur. It is relevant for people working in education, aged and community care, sport, travel and tourism, hospitality, industry enterprises and other workplace and community settings.



  • 7 hours face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment
    with online/workbook pre-work 
    (Advanced First Aid Skills text + workbook questions), OR
  • Full face-to-face classroom/workplace training and assessment is available


Course Content
This course covers the provision of advanced first aid response, life support, management of casualties, the incident and
other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

  • Advanced airway management
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques
  • Bag-valve-mask ventilation
  • Safe use of an defibrillator (AED)
  • Bleeding, fractures and other trauma
  • Eye and soft tissue injuries
  • Burns and electric shock
  • Envenomation
  • Poisoning
  • Hyperthermia and hypothermia
  • Infection control procedures
  • Secondary survey casualty assessment
  • Assessment of vital signs
  • Coordinating first aid activities
  • Triage of multiple casualties
  • Evaluation of response to critical incidents
  • Verbal and written reports of the incident
  • Legislative requirements in first aid
  • Review of contingency planning
